US Marines Exhibit
Discover the exhibition 'A Friend in Need - Old St Pauls and the US Marines in New Zealand 1942-1944', initially put on display in 2007 at Wellington's historic Old St Pauls church. Generously supported by the US Embassy and created by Story Inc, this exhibition was on show until 2009. Now at Paekākāriki Station Museum, thanks to permission from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, it has been adapted to fit our area. The National Army Museum in Waiouru has also provided additional panels. During 1942-1944, 100,000 American servicemen were in New Zealand, with about 15,000 Marines near Paekākāriki—15 for every local resident.
Visit the station museum to explore the unique connection between New Zealand and US Marines during World War II. This exhibition is part of Explore Paekākāriki's initiative, revealing our town's rich past.
