Timeline: 1819 - 1859
1819 - Te Rauparaha commences his migration from Kawhia with Ngati Toa.
1824 - Ngati Toa and their allies drive out Muaupoko and settle at Wainui (Ngati Haumia/Ngati Toa), Pari Pari (Manukorihi/Te Ati Awa) and Whareroa (NgatiMaru/Te Ati Awa).
1827 - John Guard and Dicky Barrett, begin whaling in the area
1841 - Beach becomes the ‘road’ north for both Maori and settlers.
1847–8 - Paekakariki over the hill road was built by Royal Engineers and Te Ati Awa workers. ‘Scotch Jock’ Nicol and his wife, Kahe open the first Paekakariki Hotel. (photo: below right/top)
1858 - Cobb & Co establish a coach link between Wellington & Wanganui.
1859 - Sale of Wainui and Whareroa Blocks to the Crown.
Timeline: 1867-1886
1867 - Captain Henry Lynch granted 1200 acres for military service.
1869 - First Post Office opened (in the pub).
1876 - Mackay leases the Whareroa plateau.
1877 - First meeting of Hutt County Council (Kapiti being in the Horokiwi Riding).
1884 - Paekākāriki Police Station opened.
1884 - First Railway Station, house and signal box constructed.
1886 - Wellington Manawatu Railway line completed to Longburn. First School opened. Pakeha families were Smith’s, Lynch’s & Mackay’s.
Timeline: 1900-1918
1900 - Road from Paekākāriki to Paraparaumu built through Waterfall and Valley roads. Six years later rebuilt west of the railway line now part of SH1.
1904 - First house built by Emily Tilley (now the Playcentre).
1908 - St. Peter’s Church opened. New Zealand Railways took control of Wellington Manawatu Railway Co.
1910 - New Station and Signal Boxes opened and marshalling yards developed.
1911 - Permanent Post Office opened.
1913 - Surf Life Saving Club founded by railway workers.
1918 - St. Peter’s Hall opened
Timeline: 1920-1952
1920 - Holtom's Building in Beach Road erected. Wally Leach presented movies at St Peters Hall.
1922 - Public Water Supply opened & septic tanks replaced tank water for sewage.
1924 - Wellington Road and The Parade north to Henare Street built.
1929 - Tennis Club established.
1932 - Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Convent opened. Bowling Club established.
1936–9 - Public Works Department built Centennial Highway.
1940 - Electrification of the railway from Wellington to Paekakariki.
1942-3 - US Marines arrived. Camps Paekakariki, MacKay & Russell were built in six weeks. Soldiers went from here to Guadalcanal, and later to Tarawa.
1945 - Present school opened on Wellington Road
1952 - Wellington City Council made Queen Elizabeth Park a recreational area.
Timeline: 1960-1987
1960 - Paekākāriki becomes a County Town.
1966 - Former Surf Club becomes the Memorial Hall.
1968 - Station Refreshment Rooms closed.
1971 - Steam Incorporated established.
1974 - Kapiti Borough Council established, with Paekākāriki as a Ward.
1981 - Bill Carson, village personality & chemist, closes his shop after 50 years.
1983 - Rail Electrification extended from Paekakariki to Paraparaumu
1987 - Whareroa Farm sold to Land Corp.
Timeline: 1995-2008
1995 - Paekākāriki Station Museum open.
2004 - Flooding of the Waikakariki Stream causes severe damage in the village.
2006 - Paekākāriki Hotel demolished.
2006 - Whareroa Farm to stay in public ownership.
2007 - St. Peter’s Hall gifted to the Paekākāriki community to be restored.
2008 - Restored Paekakariki Signal Box was opened.
